To use WordPress as a standard website or website plus blog then you need to configure a static front page.
To do that you create a page and then designate it as the front page in the settings.
If you also want a blog then you create a page to use as the blog page and designate that in the setup.
As part of the initial setup you will need to:
- Configure the blog name and blog tagline
- Check the site url.
- Check/configure an email address
- Create two pages one for the home page (called home) and one for the blog called blog and configure WordPress to use a static front page.
- Change the permalinks to use descriptive names instead of the default numbers.
These changes are covered in the following video:
Watch Initial WordPress Setup- Static Front Page on Youtube and please leave your comments

Awesome! Watched the first vid about a static site and will now give it a try!
I need to get RID of the big white space above the header as well as the black just below the header – this has me totally flabergasted.
Thank you so much!
PS: Video was VERY well done!
Install the 2010 weaver theme and use the 2010 sub theme and this will give you more control of the layout
